Ballaké Sissoko & Vincent Ségal – Chamber Music
Chamber Music is a collaboration between Ballaké Sissoko, who plays the traditional kora, a lute-harp from Mali, and Vincent Ségal, the French cellist who plays for the trip-hop band Bumcello. It is also, quite simply, one of the most elegant and beautiful recordings of "world music" in recent years. At a time when cross-cultural music has tended toward highly-caffeinated electric pop and dance music, Sissoke and Segal remind us that there is room – and maybe even a need – for a quieter, more refined world music.
Transnational Dubstep is the first major compilation to document the fusion of dubstep and global roots music. It has been conceptualized & compiled by co-owner/editor & the driving force behind the Generation Bass blog, DJ UMB in cooperation with Six Degrees Records. The record pulls together some of the most exciting new producers in electronic music who are incorporating sounds from around the planet with the bass bin shaking thump of dubstep.
Globally celebrated singer Natacha Atlas has been building towards the subtle beauty of her brand new album ever since 2008's internationally acclaimed acoustic, orchestral album Ana Hina.
The new album Mounqaliba, recorded with guests including pianist Zoe Rahman, a 20-piece Turkish ensemble and a chamber orchestra integrating western and Arabic styles, Mounqaliba (which means being in a state of reversal' in classical Arabic) is a stunning set of original new songs, evocative interludes, and a limpid, lucid reading of Nick Drake's The Riverman.
Undersea Poem - Makes Me Happy (The Real Tuesday Weld - Clerkenwell Kid Mix)
For Chris Root and Juju Stulbach, making music is like capturing sunshine in a bottle. The New York City-based pair has perennially chased the sun – and surf – when the northern weather has grown cold. With each trip to their favorite spots on the Pacific coast of Mexico or the beaches of Brazil, they've been inspired to crystallize their adventures into dreamy, sexy and intimate songs. They capture the idyllic side of their life by the sea, along with something of the bittersweet feelings that can accompany the viewing of an impossibly gorgeous sunset. Undersea Poem is the name of their band, as well as the name of their first album together since disbanding their much-loved trio, Mosquitos, and it showcases their most evocative and alluring songs yet.
Brownout – Aguilas and Cobras Remixed and Regrooved
Brownout, the Psychedelic Latin Funk alter ego of Grupo Fantasma, heated up dance-floors and critic's lists around the world with last year's Aguilas and Cobras record. The group's trademark soulful beats, psychedelic guitar excursions, tough grooves and ultra-tight horn arrangements have now been handed over to a dream team of remixers from the electronic dance, funk, cumbia and nu-groove scene, resulting in Aguilas and Cobras Remixed and Regrooved.
Remixers include J Boogie, The Mexican Dubwiser, Tal M. Klein, Kokolo's Ray Lugo, Second Sky & Thomas Blondet, Jeremy Sole, Senor Oz, Afrolicious, Anthony Mansfield, Grant Phabao & CaZ.
On Bollyhood Bass, you'll hear the spirit of David Starfire's native region and Creole heritage mostly in the gutbucket funk that animates nearly every track – as well as in the hip hop elements that he has distributed generously throughout the program. Although David designed and built all of the album's kaleidoscopically varied grooves, moods and ambiences, he mostly limited his instrumental contributions to piano, guitar, and bass. With two triumphant electro-Asian projects now under his belt, David is already starting to think about what musical road he'll be taking next. Whatever the next thing turns out to be, you can be certain that David Starfire's music will continue to blend a variety of musical elements and traditions into a new fusion of sounds that intrigue the mind while simultaneously moving the body irresistibly out onto the dancefloor.
Pacifika'sdebut album, 2008's Asuncion, introduced their artful blend of indie rock, bossa nova, Afropop, and dub production.
With the new Supermagique, Pacifika have refined that sound – a multilingual, listener-friendly music that marries languid Latin rhythms to a deep dance groove, and offers a high-gloss sheen with some surprisingly sharp edges.
The release of the concert album Live affirms that Mali's young lion has become a legend in his own right. Not only does Livecapture the excitement of Vieux's much- anticipated World Cup performance, but it confirms what tens of thousands of music fans around the world already know: VFT's live show is championship-caliber.
