"Drumming Up A Storm," presents a whole world in just over five minutes. Whether it's our world or not is open to question. The individual pieces can be identified (well, most of them, anyway), but when put together they make something a lot harder to pin down. The eerie call of an Asian flute leads into a strong tribal groove, created from Latin percussion, drum loops, and electronic sequencing. The melody is ingeniously constructed from a sample of African call-and-response singing punctuated by a Big Band brass section. There is no way this combination should work. But it does.
